X-Ray for Dogs

X-rays are a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying bone and organ conditions in dogs. Our Clarksville veterinarians provide insight into the X-ray procedure and what you should expect.

X-Rays for Your Dog

X-rays are a commonly used diagnostic tool in both human and veterinary healthcare. They allow us to examine your dog's internal systems and identify issues that can't be seen with the naked eye.

X-rays are useful in detecting pregnancy, broken bones, tumors, enlarged organs, foreign objects, and more.

However, in cases where X-rays cannot provide a detailed view of tissues, ligaments, and organs, other diagnostic imaging techniques, such as MRI and Ultrasound, may be more beneficial.

How Long Do Dog X-Rays Take?

When you take your pet to the vet, an X-ray may be performed to diagnose any medical issues or conduct other diagnostic tests. No specific preparation is required beforehand. The vet will examine your pet first and then explain the X-ray procedure to you, including what they will be looking for. Typically, the X-ray takes around 10 minutes to complete.

Sedation

Sometimes, it might be necessary to sedate a dog to obtain a clear X-ray. If your dog is calm, not in too much pain, and can lie down comfortably while the X-ray is taken, sedation may not be required.

However, if your dog is anxious, in pain, or unable to lie down in a comfortable position, your vet may recommend sedation. Additionally, your vet may suggest sedation if it is necessary to relax your dog's muscles to obtain a clear image.

Safety of X-Rays for Dogs

Radiography is a safe, non-invasive, and painless medical procedure that uses very low doses of radiation. Even pregnant dogs can safely undergo X-rays since the required level of radiation exposure is minimal.

However, if you have any concerns about using X-ray technology or the potential need for sedation during the procedure, it's best to discuss them with your veterinarian.

They can help you understand the risks and benefits in your dog's specific case and guide you in making an informed decision about whether or not to proceed with the procedure.

Cost of a Dog X-Ray

The cost of your dog's X-rays is determined by a wide range of factors, including the area being X-rayed, your dog's size, whether sedation was used, your location, the vet you are seeing, and more. Your vet can provide you with an estimate before proceeding with the procedure.
